Our history, our mission

About the Network

The Hungarian Agroecology Network is a nationwide network whose members are individuals and organizations who take an active role in the development of the domestic agroecological transformation. Our members include farmers, educators, academics, producer and consumer communities, NGOs and representatives of short supply chains.

A brief history of the Network

Hungary’s first agroecological conference was organized in November 2019 in cooperation with the Védegylet, the ESSRG and the French Institute of Hungary. The conference was followed by a workshop, the purpose of which was to connect the actors of agroecological initiatives in Hungary and to form a basis for the future cooperation of those involved.

Embracing the cooperation, the Hungarian Agroecology Network was established in 2020-2021 with the organization of the Protection Association, which has continued its work with its own association background since 2022.

We work for a world, where…

  • our social system is aligned with the order of nature;
  • environmental, economic and social sustainability are inseparable;
  • environmental ethics is an integral part of food production, processing and distribution, as well as agricultural policy;
  • traditional and academic ecological knowledge help each other and contribute to making the food system sustainable;
  • the food system serves both nature and human health;
  • quality, local, nutritious food is available to everyone, regardless of social, economic status or geographical location;
  • people’s self-sovereignty of food, seeds and farmland is intact;
  • there is a conscious consumer attitude and closer cooperation between farmer and consumer;
  • the production and fair distribution of our food in sufficient quantity and quality takes place without waste;
  • our agricultural practices serve the revival of cultural landscapes, harmonize with natural processes and do not burden or pollute the environment;
  • the countryside is repopulated and attractive, local communities are formed, rural life is sustainable, humane and attractive;
  • those working in agriculture receive a decent income and social respect for their work, and they perform their work in safe conditions;
  • broad circles of society have a say in the decision-making processes and their interests are asserted – especially those who live under oppression.

Our goals

To connect and strengthen individuals and organizations involved in agroecology. To form a meeting point for our knowledge-producing and knowledge-sharing community. Our long-term goal is to promote the domestic agro-ecological transition, the realization of food self-determination through joint work and movement building, and to work together to create a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable agricultural production, processing and distribution system in Hungary.
